August 2009:
28th August: Launch of the Coastal Current arts festival this evening. It's always a good event with a lot going on, although I'll be on holiday for most of it this year. At least I'll be back for the final week, when there are lots of concluding events. Peter Chowney
27th August: The Ore Valley Forum planning special interest group this evening .. where local people come along to discuss planning issues in the Ore Valley, although only councillors from Tressell Ward (ie Jay and I!) ever turn up - the Tories from Baird ward can't be bothered. It's a useful meeting though, and gives us an opportunity to discuss concerns with local planning applications, and the several stalled housing developments there are currently in the ward. Peter Chowney
26th August: Police street surgery in Deepdene gardens this evening. However, they forgot to publicise it, and it rained - so no-one turned up!! Peter Chowney
25th August: A briefing from someone from the health authority today, telling us about health problems in Tressell ward. Smoking and binge drinking are way above average in the ward, but then we knew that already. Wasn't all that clear what could be done about it, but it will hopefully be the beginning of better communication with health workers, and a route to deal with problems passed to us by local people with health services. Peter Chowney
20th August: A new meeting today, with council officers and Jay to look at specific issues and problems in each ward - so we were discussing Tressell. Worthwhile, although most of the things we talked about, we'd already discussed with officers elsewhere. Peter Chowney
18th August: Inspection of Halton Estate today, again with Mike Bushell. Some problems there at the moment with older children hanging around and behaving anti-socially. They appear to be Amicus Horizon tenants, so the estate manager and the police seem to be on to it. They'll be paying the parents a visit, they say - in the end, they can (and will) take repossession proceedings if the nuisance continues ... Peter Chowney
13th August: The day of the Waterside Close fun day! Bouncy castles, children's entertainment, football - and a perfect day for it. Spent a couple of hours there. Did a useful walk around the area with Orbit housing association too ... Peter Chowney
12th August: Out on an inspection of Bembrook Road this afternoon, with Mike Bushell, the Amicus Horizon housing association manager. Not many problems, but worth doing, to keep an eye on what's going on in the ward. Peter Chowney
11th August: Licensing Sub-Committee in the morning. We were dealing with reviews of bars in George Street - this took all day, thanks to the barristers. In the end, we took the same action as with the previous George Street licensing reviews, to introduce noise controls and to end outside drinking at 10pm. We'll have to see if it works. Peter Chowney
8th August: Council advice surgery again today. Not many people came this time, even though we leafleted most of the ward. Mind you it, it was warm and sunny, and carnival day, so they presumably had better things to do! Peter Chowney
3rd August: Substituted on a special Scrutiny Committee to look at the Council's senior management restructuring proposals, which had been called in for scrutiny by the committee's (Tory) chair. We had an interesting debate. In the end, I moved that the proposal put forward at cabinet by Labour comrades (to set up a special cross-party panel, including council employees, to look at the issue) should be recommended to cabinet. This was agreed unanimously. The Tory-controlled cabinet can overturn this of course, and probably will. But it will at least prove that they're not interested in listening to anything anyone else has to say. Peter Chowney
