April 2009:

April 28th:

Door knocking in Clifton Road today.  Fairly peaceful, not too many problems.  We seem to have sorted out some of the dog fouling and litter problems at least.  Apart from a complaint about a noisy cafe, that was about it.

April 27th:

Cabinet meeting today, with several reports on the findings of scrutiny reviews: on CCTV, sickness absence, and trading council services.  I would have liked to have been there, especially for that last one, as I was on the review and wasn't happy with the rather weak and negative response to it from officers.  However, I was away for the weekend at a hotel in the Cotswolds, courtesy of Tesco clubcard vouchers!  I shall have to find another way to take up this issue - it remains my strong belief that the Council should be doing a lot more to raise income by trading its services in the private sector.

April 18th:

Ore Spring Fair today.  A bit of music in the Salvation Army Hall, and a plate smashing stall, which was popular.  A lot of people popped in to see what was going on, and to meet people from Ore Community Land Trust, along with Tressell Councillors, local county councillors and Labour candidates.  Not a single Tory councillor showed up though - no surprises there.

April 16th:

Out door knocking today, another sunny day for it.  This time, we did Coghurst and Percy Road.  Not quite as cheerful and happy as last week ... but of those who were in, all seemed friendly and pleased to see us.  One or two problems arose, primarily around parking, but otherwise residents didn't have much to complain about, it seems.

April 15th:

Council meeting this evening.  I managed to speak, again on my pet topic of how the Council could be easing the burden on local taxpayers by using its powers to trade services, and complaining about how that wasn't done for the building cleaning contract.  There is a lot of timidity in this current administration - not enough imagination, not enough preparedness to explore new ideas.  Otherwise, it was a very friendly and non-confrontational meeting.  As I said, we might as well have just got together for a group hug and not bothered with the debates ...

April 8th:

Out today to do a bit of door knocking in Ticehurst Close, Cookson Gardens and Tuppenny Close.  There had been some concerns about the next door Little Acres Farm site being used for car and bike racing, but it all seemed quiet today and the residents we spoke to were remarkably happy.  It was a warm, pleasant day, however ... people always seem to be happier when the sun shines.

April 4th:

Did a street stall in the morning outside Ore Co-op, with the county council candidates in East Hastings (Kim Forward for Ore & Baird, Jeremy Birch for Tressell & Old Hastings).  One of the Labour South East candidates for the Euro elections was there too.  Considering the weather was so miserable, a lot of people seemed to want to talk - it was a good, useful morning.
