February 2009:
February 24th It was the Council's annual budget meeting last night. All a bit chaotic, with the Liberals moving uncosted amendments, getting advice from officers in the middle of the meeting, then withdrawing their amendments. In the end, the Labour group's amendments to the budget were carried, with the support of the Liberals. Most important of these was the saving of four street warden posts, which the Tories were proposing to cut. On the Council's performance plan, we also managed to get tackling climate change reinstated as a key priority. So a good night overall, for the Labour Group - and for Hastings people, I think. Peter Chowney February 21st Went to the second 'Energise Hastings' meeting, at the Bridge, as the Labour group representative. No sign of any Liberal Democrat or Tory councillors there. 'Energise Hastings' is a group that's aiming to publicise and encourage ways in which people can make their homes more energy efficient. Hastings Trust reported on an interesting project they're doing where they've bought up a big old house in Cambridge Gardens, and will convert it into four energy-efficient flats - eco retro-fit, I think they call it. Then they'll use the experience to help and advise others. And sell the flats .. sounds good! Peter Chowney February 19th Welcome to the Tressell Councillors blog! I get the first entry ... The meeting of full Council last night was remarkably short - all over by 7.30, largely because there had been virtually nothing on the previous two Cabinet agendas. It was a good-natured affair too, with most of the venom reserved for the 'Observer', with some justification. They had run the headline 'Closed', about St Mary's-in-the-Castle, when a cross-party group had just appointed a tenant to keep it open. But there, why run a good news story when you can make up a bad one? It was all a lull before the next storm though, when we meet again to consider next year's budgets, and a lot of Tory-proposed cuts .. expect fireworks then. Peter Chowney
